Among Amazonian indigenous peoples, Igapó means “when the river embraces the forest” and refers to the rainforest areas that are flooded during the rainy season.
Sandrinha Barbosa – vocal
A member of the indigenous Xokó people, she grew up in the Amazon region. She was introduced to shamanism at the age of four. Later, she studied medicine and sang in a popular music choir at the University of Manaus.
In Germany, she began singing Bossa Nova and modern Brazilian music as part of the Igapó project. She performed extensively in Germany and Luxembourg with Igapó and Itapuã, a band that incorporated elements of jazz. She also writes poetry and was recognized in a Brazilian competition as one of the country’s top Indigenous poets.
Hubert Gross – guitar
Studied music at the University of Oldenburg and collaborated with various jazz bands in Northern Germany. Worked on a cultural management research project at the University of Oldenburg. Later, in Brazil, he was the guitarist for the Academia das Águas project, alongside poet and singer Binho and percussionist Bira Lorenzo. Upon returning to Germany, he performed with jazz bands in Rhineland-Palatinate and founded the Igapó project as well as the band Itapuã, which blends modern Brazilian music with jazz.
