Papa Gaios are a group offering a wide range of world music. However, that label falls far short of the reality experienced when witnessing the band live. In their hands, a classical waltz naturally transforms into a Latin American *chacarera*, or a mazurka takes on the hypnotic pulse of a summer festival; the seamless shifts between Balkan and Latin styles attest to their deep understanding of the connections between cultures and music—a transformative quality that permeates their entire body of work. If this description doesn’t quite grab you, look them up and give them a listen.
They were sensational as the first act on the Cais stage on the Friday night, a huge hit with the audience who were astounded to see, amongst other things, someone playing a trumpet and an accordion simultaneously. A wonderful high-energy experience.
