Dear Manuela,
Further to our discussion regarding the use of the ‘Carlos Brito’
Bibliotic for the Month of October this year, we propose to have a short story writing competition.
We believe this event will
- Encourage creativity
- Promote literacy and a love of writing and reading
- Celebrate the diversity and varied cultural background that makes our community unique.
- Ensure inclusivity and broad participation
The competition will feature several categories. The categories include:
- Memoirs general
- Memoirs local. There will be a special category for memoirs that are based on stories that relate to the life experiences of the citizens of Alcoutim and San Lucar
- Fiction, general
- Fiction, with a focus on the region.
We will invite the Universidade dos Tempos Livres/Actividia in VRSA and local artists to do a painting that will be displayed with each entry. We propose to mount them in the library, along with a picture of the author, a brief biography of the author, a synopsis of the story, and a printed copy of the story.
Each story will be 3,000 words or less and will be available to be taken and read in the library. The readers will vote for each story and the winner of each category will be selected by this method.
We are also looking at an award for the best artwork for each story.
There are other possibilities to consider, one is the inclusion of a children’s category in cooperation with the schools.
We are available to meet with you to discuss this further if you wish or with your permission we can begin arranging the details with Cristina in the library.
Kind regards,
Carola Sprengel and Paul Doody
